The Canisius College rowing team closed out its Fall schedule at The Head of the Genesee  held along the Genesee River in Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday. In the day's racing, the Varsity Eight placed fifth overall with the Second Varsity Eight finishing tenth.

Joining the Golden Griffins in the field of ten boats in the open Varsity Eight race were Syracuse, the University at Buffalo, Cornell, and Duquesne.

"Overall, I'm pleased with the performance of our boats," said head coach Joel Furtek. "For our first boat to run with Duquesne -- just 5 hundredths of a second behind in the 1500 -- who showed great speed in winning the Head of the Ohio last week, and to improve on our opening week performance against a very fast Buffalo crew...these are good signs. We made progress against other boats we've raced, and across the board everyone performed at their highest level yet."

In the 5K-race down the Genesee River, the Griffs' Varsity Eight finished fifth and the Second Varsity Eight placed tenth. Syracuse would occupy the top spot followed by Cornell's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight.

"It was a beautiful day for racing, but a difficult one. There were several dangerous situations out on the water and I'm glad all of our student-athletes made it home safely," stated Furtek of the water conditions. "I'm sorry that some of our competitors had to pull up during the racing, because we'd like to know how we'd have stacked up - but I'm proud of coxswain Hannah Blum's preparation and quick action to sidestep the trouble and carry on. In the end, no one was hurt, so we're just left with lots of results that are hard to parse."

Following the morning portion, the teams competed in a 1500-meter race. Each team's score was compiled through the multiplication of the 1500-meter time by three and was then added to the team's time from the 5K-race.

In the end, the Golden Griffins' Varsity Eight placed fifth overall and the Second Varsity Eight finished tenth. The final team standings included Syracuse in first with Cornell's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight following behind.

With their performance at The Head of the Genesee, the Golden Griffins close out their Fall schedule with four races completed.

"I'm excited now to return to our Fall training and solidify these gains with renewed internal focus. We have a long haul until our first scheduled race in March at the Jesuit Invitational, and we're ready now to put those five months to good use."
