OXFORD, Ohio - Although the 2012-13 Miami hockey season is still over a month away, there will be plenty of talent on display at the Goggin Ice Center next week as 20 former RedHawks return toArena to prepare for their upcoming professional season during Miami's second annual Pro Camp Aug. 20-24.
Among the RedHawks returning are seven players with NHL experience, led by 2012 Stanley Cup champion Alec Martinez ('09) of the Los Angeles Kings. Also coming back to train and workout is New Jersey Devils defenseman Andy Greene ('06), who played against Martinez in the Stanley Cup Finals, Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Jones ('08) and San Jose Sharks forward Tommy Wingels ('11).
Other Miami men with NHL experience who will be back in Oxford are 2011 Hobey Baker Award winner Andy Miele ('11) of the Phoenix Coyotes, Jarod Palmer ('10) of the Minnesota Wild and Justin Mercier ('09) of the Colorado Avalanche. Joining Miele and Wingels from the 2011 class are defenseman Vincent LoVerde and forwards Pat Cannone and Justin Vaive.
The recently departed 2012 class will also have strong representation with seven members returning to their former hockey home, including defensemen Cameron Schilling, Will Weber and Chris Wideman, all of whom signed entry-level contracts in the spring, forwards Alden Hirschfeld and Trent Vogelhuber and netminders Connor Knapp and Cody Reichard.
Charlie Effinger ('08) will be the third goaltender attending Miami's Pro Camp, coming off a stellar season with the Missouri Mavericks in the Central Hockey League. Brandon Smith and Gary Steffes from the class of 2010 round out the Pro Camp roster. In all, there will be 11 forwards, six defenseman and three goaltenders.
The players will have open ice each morning for an hour beginning at 9 a.m. followed by time for weightlifting. Goalie sessions will take place beginning at 1:15 p.m. each day with drills for all players beginning at 2:15 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. On-ice workouts for all the players begin at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday through Friday with practice ending around 4 p.m. each day.
Helping the pros with their skills during Pro Camp will be Miami's coaching staff of head coach Enrico Blasi, associate head coach Brent Brekke, assistant coach Nick Petraglia and strength and conditioning coach Matt Cady.
All practice sessions atArena or on the "B" Pad of Goggin Ice Center are free and open to the public. Fans are encouraged to come watch some of their favorite RedHawks hit the ice once again as they get ready for their own 2012-13 seasons.
