Drake Softball Drops Pair to MVC-Leading UNI on Friday Night

CEDAR FALLS - The MVC-leading UNI Panthers won both games against the Drake Bulldogs on Friday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the conference. UNI won game one, 5-1 and the Panthers singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to win game two, 3-2.

In game one, Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) pitched four innings and allowed three runs on three hits and struck out seven batters. Gronewold took the loss for Drake (16-18, 8-3 MVC). Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) relieved Gronewold and allowed two runs on four hits in two innings of work.

UNI (27-9, 11-0 MVC) used the long ball to win the game as they got a solo blast from Mackenzie Daigh and a two-run homer by Whitney Plein. The Panthers added two runs in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single.

Drake scored their lone run of the game on an RBI single by Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) that plated Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.) in the sixth inning.

Jaimie Duffek (Brookfield, Ill.) put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first in game two. The senior outfielder had an RBI groundout that scored Gronewold in the third inning.

UNI tied the game in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly and added another run on an RBI double by Plein in the sixth inning to go ahead, 2-1. Gronewold tied the game in the seventh with an RBI single that plated Randel.

Brown drove home the winning run with an RBI single to score Hunter and give the Panthers the win.

Gronewold pitched six plus innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out six batters and she finished 2-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Gronewold leads the MVC with 138 strikeouts.

The series will conclude with a single game on Saturday with first pitch set for noon.
