Drake Splits Two Games on Friday at UTA Tournament
ARLINGTON, Texas - The Drake Bulldogs (3-6) split two games on Friday at the 2012 University of Texas at Arlington tournament. Drake defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff, 16-4 and lost a close extra inning game to Houston Baptist, 3-2.
In game one, the Bulldogs bats erupted against the Golden Lions with 18 hits led by designated hitter Sarah Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa) who had three hits and finished with three RBI. Six other Bulldogs each collected two hits and Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.) smashed a grand slam in the fifth inning.
Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) started the game and allowed three runs and struck out five.
In game two, Drake battled but fell in a close game to Houston Baptist that lasted nine innings.
Lindsday Vande Wal (Prairie City, Iowa) was 2-3 with a solo home run and Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) was 2-4 with a stolen base for the Bulldogs.
Gronewold pitched all nine innings and allowed just two earned runs and struck out five.
Drake will return to action tomorrow when they face host Texas at Arlington at 1 p.m.
