JANUARY 4, 2012
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Drake men's soccer team added some additional awards as seniors Matt Kuhn (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South) and Thomas Ostrander (Fort Dodge, Iowa/St. Edmond Catholic) garnered National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Men's College Scholar All-America Team accolades.
Kuhn, a first-team honoree to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Soccer Team, was named to the second team, while Ostrander became only the third Bulldog to pull in honors more than once with his selection to the third team. He was a first-team honoree in 2010.
Drake received multiple selections to the national academic squads for the third consecutive season.
"Thomas and Matt are two exceptional student-athletes," Bulldog head coach Sean Holmes commented. "We've had some great guys in this program, but these two have really set a new standard, especially with their perfect 4.0 GPA graduate school performances."
An accounting major, Kuhn owns a perfect 4.00 graduate school GPA, the highest of any player selected to the first, second or third teams, respectively. He led Drake in goals (11), points (26) and game-winners (3), while sitting third in shots (44) and shots on goal (20), en route to being tabbed to the All-Missouri Valley Conference first team. Kuhn became only the fifth Bulldog to earn first-team All-MVC Scholar-Athlete accolades three times, collecting honors in 2008, 2009 and this season.
Ostrander, who maintains a 4.00 graduate school GPA in accounting, led the team in shots (46) and shots on goal (23), while ranking second in assists (4) and goals (5) en route to earning second team All-MVC accolades.
To be nominated for consideration, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution and either be in their second year at the current school if a transfer student.
