DES MOINES, Iowa--The Drake Bulldogs football program has added Kahlil Carter to the coaching staff as cornerbacks coach, head coach Chris Creighton announced Monday.

Carter brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to his position at Drake. A former Arkansas Razorback (1994-97), Carter enjoyed an 11-year professional playing career in the Arena Football League, Canadian Football League and NFL Europe.

"We are very fortunate to have hired Coach Carter to work with our cornerbacks," Creighton said. "He has outstanding experience as a player, and is a gifted coach. He brings a contagious energy to our team."

Carter began his coaching career while still a player in the Arena Football League, as co-defensive coordinator for the AFL2 Arkansas Twisters in 2007, and then as player/coach with the Iowa Barnstormers in 2010. As a defensive back and team captain, Carter assisted with weekly game-plan preparation and in player personnel for the Barnstormers.

"I am ecstatic about becoming a member of the Drake University Football family," Carter said. "I feel like God has me right where he wants me right now. I hope to bring an exciting, enthusiastic coaching style to an already dynamic staff. I feel blessed and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a great tradition here at Drake."

Carter took his first full-time coaching position in 2010 as secondary and linebackers coach at Graceland University. He then served as defensive coordinator for the Trenton Steel of the Southern Indoor Football League in the spring of 2011, and most recently coached cornerbacks at Valley High School in West Des Moines during its 2011 state 4A championship season.

Highlights from his lengthy playing career include the longest run for a touchdown (36 yards) in Arena Bowl Championship history with the Orlando Predators in 2006, and second-team All-AFL honors with Nashville in 2005. Carter recorded the third-most interception return yards in a season (184) with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts in 2006, and made eight tackles in the Grey Cup for the Montreal Alouettes in 2008, third-most in Grey Cup history.

Carter began his professional playing career in 2000 with the Arkansas Twisters of the Arena Football League 2 (AF2), then moved on to the Milwaukee Mustangs (AFL, 2001) and Toronto Phantoms (AFL, 2002) before going back to the Twisters in 2003 following a training camp stint with the AFL's Tampa Bay Storm.

In 2004 Carter signed with the NFL's Buffalo Bills and was allocated to NFL Europe's Scottish Claymores, where he led the team in special teams tackles, with 28, and added three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one blocked field goal as team captain of one of the stingiest defenses in NFL Europe history. He continued through training camp with the Bills before suffering an injury.

In 2005 Carter put together an All-AFL season with the Nashville Kats, finishing second in the league in interceptions (7) and recording 70 tackles and one forced fumble. After his 2006 AFL season that ended with his appearance in the Arena Bowl with Orlando, Carter made a move to the CFL where he starred for the Toronto Argonauts for two seasons and Montreal for one (2008). He also spent time in training camp with the AFL's Kansas City Brigade in 2008, and later that season for the Predators in a playoff game, before his role with Montreal's Grey Cup team.

In 2007 Carter was named to the AF2 anniversary team and voted the No. 2 defensive specialist in AF2 history. He had his #9 jersey retired by the Twisters.

Carter is a graduate of Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., and earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from n Arkansas-Little Rock in 2000.

The Bulldogs open their 2012 season at home on Thursday, Aug. 30, vs. Grand View. Tickets are available by calling (515) 271-DOGS or visiting www.GoDrakeBulldogs.com to purchase online.
