Women's Golf Takes 9th at Creighton Classic

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's golf team closed out the Creighton Classic with a ninth-place finish on Tuesday. The Jays knocked 11 strokes off of their opening round score of 343 to bolster their position up a spot and finish with a score of 675.   

The par-72 6,010 yard Oak Hills Country Club hosted the 12-team event, which included North Dakota State, Northern Iowa and Nebraska-Omaha among others.

North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson took top honors for the fourth year in a row. She finished with a 146 (74-72). It was the 20th victory of her college career, extending her unofficial NCAA record for career victories (two more than LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster).  Northern Iowa’s Kaylee Benson (78-76=154) finished second, while Panther teammate Sarah Boss tied for third with Western Illinois’ Emily Brink (77-78=155).

North Dakota State (315-310=625) overcame a four stroke deficit on the final day to win the tournament by five strokes over defending champion Northern Iowa (311-319=630). Western Illinois (316-333=649) finished in third place.

The Jays finished with four golfers in the top 50. Senior Celeste Gassman finished tied for 15th with a 164 (84-80) in her final home meet. Sophomore Rachel Thompson finished 25th with a 167 (85-82) and freshman Grace Yowell finished tied for 38th with a 172 (86-86). Sophomore Katie Morel finished three strokes behind Yowell and tied for 44th.  Mary Cathryn Rau finished 61st with a 181 (88-93).

Junior Emily Allison (T-62, 182), freshmen Madeline Albers (68th, 186) and Shauna Hill (70th, 192) all competed as individuals.

The Jays will hit the links again with their final Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on April 20-22 in Porta Cima Mo.
