Women's Golf To Host Creighton Classic Next Week

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's golf team will host a rare home meet when members from 11 other schools come to Omaha for next week's Creighton Classic.

The meet will take place on Monday and Tuesday (April 15-16) at Oak Hills Country Club (12325 Golfing Green Drive) in Omaha. Monday's play will begin with a 9:30 am start off holes 1 and 10, while Tuesday's action will begin with 9:00 am tee times off holes 1 and 10.

The 36-hole meet features three-time defending champion Amy Anderson of North Dakota State, who won the Creighton Classic by six shots in 2010, by 14 shots in 2011, and by five shots last spring. Anderson won the US Junior Girls Amateur in 2009 at the age of 17 and owns 18 career victories in 42 college starts. A second-team All-American as a sophomore, she has finished in fourth place or better in 23 straight meets other than NCAA Championships, and according to Golf World her 18 career victories are one more than the previous unofficial NCAA record set by World Golf Hall of Famer Juli Inkster while at San Jose State.

Scheduled to compete are teams from Creighton, Concordia-St. Paul, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota, Western Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, Bellevue, Nebraska-Omaha, Upper Iowa and South Dakota State. The teams will compete on a par 72 layout that measures 6,010 yards.

Creighton's top golfer this year has been senior Celeste Gassman, who averages a team-low 81.1 strokes per round. Sophomore teammate Rachel Thompson (84.0) is second on the roster in scoring average, just ahead of classmate Katie Morel (84.2).

Last year at the Creighton Classic, Northern Iowa shot a 635 to edge Valley rival Southern Illinois by one shot for the team title. Host Creighton tied for seventh place with a 685 total, paced by an eighth-place showing from Gassman (160). NDSU's Anderson won the meet by five shots with a 149 total.

The 2011 Creighton Classic, South Dakota State shot a 664 (+88) to beat six other teams, with Northern Iowa taking second at 671 (+95). Host Creighton took fourth with a 683 and was led by then-senior Maggie Kersenbrock's 166 (+22) aggregate, good for a tie for fifth place. Anderson blew away the field with a 14-shot victory, firing a 147 (+3) total.

In 2010 at the Creighton Classic, Northern Iowa fired a 644 (+76) over two rounds to top a seven-team field, with Creighton finishing second at 656 (+88). Anderson won the meet by six strokes with a 149 (+7) total. Kersenbrock led the Jays by tying for fifth place with a 162 (+20) finish.
