LEXINGTON, Va. – Clark King Pool, home to VMI women’s water polo will see plenty of action this coming spring as head coach Anna Phelps, entering her second year in Lexington, announced the team’s 2013 schedule on Wednesday.
The Keydets will host their first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games in Lexington, kicking things off on March 23 with defending conference champion Iona College at 10 a.m. VMI will play once more on that Saturday, hosting Marist College at 2:30 p.m.. On March 24, VMI wraps up its first MAAC weekend on Post with Siena College at 10:30 a.m., followed by St. Francis (N.Y.) College at 4:30 p.m.
Prior to its first home conference weekend, VMI opens the 2013 season at the Salem International University Tournament. Times and opponents for the get together, which willed be held in Salem, W.Va. on Feb. 9 and 10, have not yet been announced.
After the Salem International Tournament, the Keydets will head west for several games, including a pair of tournaments. The first tournament will be at Phelps' alma mater, Claremont College on March 8 and 9. While in Claremont, Calif., the Keydets will take on the host school, Pomona College and at Redlands. Tournament times for the Convergence have not yet been set.
The Keydets then head to Riverside, Calif for the Cal Baptist tournament, beginning on March 12 with Occidental College at 11 a.m. (PST), followed by a March 13 game at Whittier College at 7 p.m. (PST).
On March 15 and 16, the Keydets travel to Riverside, Calif. for the Cal Baptist Tournament. Times have not yet been announced.
Following the MAAC weekend in Lexington, the Keydets will once again play host, this time to Grove City College on March 26. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. at Clark King Pool.
VMI’s second MAAC weekend will be at Villanova University on March 30 when VMI plays just two games, one against Wagner at 11:30 a.m. followed by a clash with the host at 2:30 p.m.
Once again on the following weekend, VMI play twice, squaring off with Siena at 9 a.m. and Villanova at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Four games, all in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. at St. Francis (N.Y.) highlight the Keydets final MAAC weekend, with a pair against Marist College and the host on April 13. VMI will face the Red Foxes at 11:30 a.m. and the Terriers at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday April 14, VMI will face Wagner at Noon and Iona at 3 p.m.
The Keydets round out the regular season with a tilt in the nation’s capital, facing off against George Washington University on April 20 at 6 p.m.
The 2013 MAAC Championship weekend has been set for April 27 and 28, hosted by Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Times have not been set for the tournament, which only the top four teams in the standings at season’s end qualify for.
