Jacks split twinbill with WIU
Zach Rhodes and Daniel Telford each drove in three runs to lead South Dakota State to a 7-2 victory over Western Illinois and a split of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
Western Illinois won the opener, 13-3, moving to 16-35-1 overall and 6-17 in The Summit League. The Jackrabbits ended the day 18-32-1 overall and 7-13 in league play.
Trailing 2-1, Rhodes gave the Jackrabbits the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run double to right field against Fighting Leatherneck starter Dustin Hunter that scored both Andrew Melton and Beau Hanowski. After a walk to Aaron Machbitz and infield single by Eric Danforth loaded the bases, Telford cleared the bags with a double to the right-field corner off Fighting Leatherneck reliever Philip Tolman.
Rhodes added a run-scoring single to left center in the fifth inning as he and Hanowski finished with two hits each out of the Jackrabbits' nine in the game.
WIU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Steve Kedroski tripled in the first run and later scored on a groundout. SDSU's first run of the game scored on a failed pickoff attempt as Andrew Phelan was ruled to have safely avoided the tag on a rundown and Nick Andrew scored from third base.
Jackrabbit starter Kolton Emery limited WIU to only two hits over the final four innings in earning his first victory of the season with a seven-inning complete game. The sophomore right-hander struck out two, walked one and scattered six hits.
Hunter walked six, struck out five and gave up four hits over 3 1/3 innings in taking the loss.
In the opener, Western Illinois pounded out 19 hits, including a two-run home run by Matt Igara in the first inning and a three-run shot by Austin Cowen in the second inning.
The Fighting Leathernecks led 9-0 before Zach Briggs put SDSU on the board with a two-run homer to straight-away center field in the fifth inning. Hanowski scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning for the Jackrabbits' other run of the game.
All nine starters in the Fighting Leatherneck lineup posted at least one hit in the game. Tom Lilja led WIU at the plate by going 4-for-6 with a pair of runs batted in, while Mark Garton added three hits and Cowen finished with four RBI and a pair of hits.
Rhodes and Eric Danforth each had a pair of hits for the Jackrabbits.
WIU starter Rich Mascheri scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked two in seven innings.
For the second straight game, the Jackrabbits received a short outing from their starting pitcher as Stephen Bougher was knocked out after allowing eight runs on 12 hits in 3 1/3 innings. Freshman reliever Aaron Klatt struck out six in three innings, surrendering a pair of unearned runs.
The two squads will close out their respective seasons Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Erv Huether Field.
