JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona College softball team picked up a pair of wins Tuesday afternoon over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. The Gaels put up double digit efforts in both games as they won game one 12-2 before taking the finale 13-0.
In the opener, the Gaels put two runs across in the first. Junior SS Deanne Algeo reached on a Saint Peter's error to lead off the inning. With two outs, senior DP Alyssa Maiese launched her eighth home run of the season to left for the game's first two runs.
In the fourth, sophomore CF Jodi Petersen drove in Algeo with a sacrifice fly to put Iona ahead 3-0. In the sixth, Maiese added to her impressive game with a two run single in senior 2B Tessa Earley and Algeo with her third run scored of the game.
Saint Peter's put two runs across in the bottom of the sixth. Third baseman Jillian Picchini stole home before center fielder Alexis Gallagher drove in first baseman Stephanie Gilronan with a single up the middle.
The Gaels closed the door on the game with a six run seventh. Junior pinch runner Melanie Hay scored on a single by Algeo. Petersen drove in junior 3B Chelsea Sheehan with a bases loaded single before Maiese drove in Algeo with a sacrifice fly. Two more runs would come in for the Gaels when freshman Katie Jansson reached on an error scoring Peterson and senior pinch runner Erin Kyle. Senior C Melanie Gettins drove in the final Iona run when she plated Jansson with a run scoring single to center field.
Junior Sarah Jackson picked up her 12th win of the season, going seven innings and allowing four hits and two runs with 14 strikeouts. Shelby Beaver took the loss for Saint Peter's, as she allowed 12 runs, seven earned, in seven innings.
The Gaels got right on the board in the second game with a run in the first. Petersen drove a 2-0 pitch to center to drive in Algeo with the first Iona tally.
In the second, junior 1B Allyssa James led off with a double to right field. After a ground out moved James to third, Earley drove in James with a bunt single.
The Gaels put three across in the third. Maiese doubled down the left field line to open the inning and scored when Jansson reached on another Peahens error. A Gettins walk put two runners on and a ground out by James put two runners in scoring position. Sheehan drove in the duo with a double to right center and Iona was ahead 5-0 after three.
Iona would then put up five runs in the fourth. After Petersen reached on an error, Maiese launched her second home run of the day to left. Jansson would follow next with a home run of her own. With two out, James doubled and was pinch run for by senior Tierney Markou. After a walk to Sheehan, Markou and sophomore pinch runner Marisa Newman moved up a base on a wild pitch. The pair would come in on a single by Earley.
The Gaels closed out the game with a three run fifth. Sophomore LF Eileen McCann homered to left to lead off the inning. Gettins would followed in the inning with a RBI double to left field to score Hay, who pinch ran for Maiese. James followed with a single to move Gettins to third before Sheehan drove in Gettins with a single up the middle.
Maiese struck out seven in five innings, while allowing just four hits and one walk to pick up her 11th win of the season. Erica Colon allowed twelve runs, five earned, to fall to 0-12 on the year.
The Gaels return to action Saturday when they travel to Loudonville, NY for a MAAC doubleheader at Siena.
