NEW ROCHELLLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team closed out their 2011 home schedule with a dramatic two-overtime win over Loyola University Maryland Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field. In the 102nd minute, sophomore Katie Higgins headed in a corner kick for the golden goal as the Gaels topped the Greyhounds by the final of 1-0.
After an out of bounds resulted in a corner kick opportunity, freshman Safi Ayinde set the game winner up with a corner that Higgins put past the Loyola netminder for her first career tally.
The Greyhounds led in shots 14-13, with each team firing two shots each in overtime. Sophomore Trista Rivera picked up her third shutout of the year, recording five saves in the contest. Loyola goalkeeper Chantal Celestin made four saves in the game.
The Gaels, now 4-2-1 in conference play, travel to Western New York next weekend to wrap up the regular season, beginning Friday with a 7:30 pm matchup with Niagara.
