Women's Soccer Opens 2013 at Utah State and at Boise State
OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer team opens up the 2013 season with back-to-back road contests at Utah State (8/23), then on to Boise State (8/25).
8/14: L, 3-2 vs. Arkansas (Exhibition) - Morrison Stadium
8/17: W, 2-1 vs. North Dakota State (Exhibition) - Rosemount, Minn.
8/23: at Utah State - Logan, Utah - Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field, 5:00 p.m.
8/25: at Boise State- Boise, Idaho - Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex, 1:00 p.m.
Scouting the Creighton Bluejays (0-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST):
The Creighton Bluejays open the 2013 season with consecutive road contests at Utah State (8/23) and Boise State (8/25). The Jays and Aggies played to a 1-1 tie last season with both squads scoring in the opening period.
The Bluejays at 1-1 in their two exhibition matches, highlighted by a 2-1 comeback win over North Dakota State on Saturday, Aug. 17. As a unit the Jays will rely on senior Lauren Cingoranelli to lead the offense and freshman keeper Danielle Rice defensively.
Last Meeting with
Utah State & Boise State:
Creighton’s last meeting with Boise State came in 2011, a 2-0 for the Jays. Current Bluejays, Stephanie Anasi, Madelyn Bucnker and Lauren Cingoranelli played in that contest.
Scouting the Utah State Aggies (0-0-0):
As the Jays move to the BIG EAST in 2013, Utah State will begin its first season as a member of Mountain West Conference this season.
Coming off its second straight appearance in the NCAA Tounrament, Utah State closed 2012 with a 13-3-6 mark.
Former Bluejay assistant coach Heather Cairns remains at the helm for the Aggies. Cairns has a career record of 103-77-25 (.563). Cairns coached at Creighton from 1999-2002 under current Bluejay head coach Bruce Erickson.
Utah State’s offense will be led by seniors Jennifer Flynn and Mari Miyashiro. The duo led the Aggies in scoring last season with 16 and 14 points respectively. Utah State will turn to sophomore Jeannie Woller in the net. Woller appeared in six matches last season, including 65
minutes against the Jays.
Scouting the Boise State Broncos (0-0-0):
Following a 9-9-2 record in 2012, Boise State returns nine starters from last season. Head coach Jim Thomas will begin his first season. Boise State will open 2013 on Friday, Aug. 23 against Idaho State.
Junior goalkeeper Maddy McDevitt returns as the starter for the Broncos. Last season she allowed 24 goals in 19 matches (1.25 GAA), recording 67 saves
Offensively the Broncos turn to senior Katy Oehring and junior Shannon Schueren. The duo combined to put up 24 points last season, led by 15 from Schueren.
Jays in Season Openers
Creighton has an 11-10-2 mark in season openers all-time, including a 5-7-2 record under Bruce Erickson. The Jays dropped a 1-0 (ot) match to Iowa State last season and bested South Dakota State 1-0 in 2011. The Jays are 6-7-1 in road openers under Erickson.

The last time Creighton opened a season with back-to-back road contests was in 2011. The Jays swept matches at South Dakota State (1-0) and at UMKC (2-0).
With three freshman goalkeepers on the
roster, Creighton is guarenteed to start a new keeper in the season-opener for the first time under Bruce Erickson in 1999.
It will be the first time a freshman has started the season-opener since at least the second season on women’s soccer in 1990 (statistics unavailable for the 1989 & 1990 seasons).
