FARGO, N.D.--Freshman pitcher Krista Menke tossed a five-hit shutout to lead the North Dakota State to a 3-0 win in game one, while IPFW's Courtney Cronin limited the Bison to two hits in a 5-1 victory in game two in a Summit League doubleheader played Friday, March 30, at the Ellig Sports Complex.

North Dakota State (23-12, 7-1 Summit) and IPFW (25-8, 8-3) are scheduled to close out the three-game series at noon Saturday, March 31. The second game loss snapped NDSU's nine-game winning streak.

In game one, the Bison scored single runs in the first two innings. Taylor Mortensen led off the first inning with a double down the left field line. Mortensen moved to third on a ground out and scored on Katie Tamayo's single up the middle.

NDSU went up 2-0 in the second. Jamie Gay reached on a walk, moved to second on a fielder's choice and third during a double play. Gay scored on an error. She went 2-for-2 to lead the Bison.

North Dakota State extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning when Cristina Borek led off the frame with her fourth home run of the season.

Menke (14-6) struck out a season-high 11 batters and walked one. She worked out of trouble in the sixth inning when the Bison turned their sixth double play of the season. Megan Flenniken (7-4) picked up the loss. Flenniken allowed six hits, struck out three and walked three.

In the nightcap, IPFW took advantage of a bases situation in the first inning. Dani Pugh stroked a two-out, two run single through the left side to put the Mastodons ahead 2-0. Pugh also added a pair of singles in the first game.

North Dakota State cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth when Mortensen drilled a 1-2 pitch well over the left field fence. It was Mortensen's fifth home run of the season.

However, IPFW got things rolling offensively with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Alex Bousquet was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and the next batter, Ashleigh Bousquet delivered a two RBI single to center.

Cronin, who improved to 13-2, kept NDSU off-stride during the contest. She struck out six and issued now walks. Whitney Johnson (9-6) and Menke pitched for NDSU with Johnson recording the loss. The pair combined to allow three hits, walk eight and strike out five.
