BOONE, N.C. - The third-seeded College of Charleston softball team was tagged with a 6-1 loss to second-seed Chattanooga in the second round of the Southern Conference Championships at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium on Thursday evening.

With the loss the Cougars move to the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament where they'll see fourth-seed UNC Greensboro on Friday, May 11 at 10 a.m.

Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) went 2-for-3 in the game with a homerun in the sixth inning which provided for CofC's only run.

The Lady Mocs hit three home runs in the bottom of the sixth and also scored two unearned runs with a pair of sacrifice flies in the third.

The Lady Mocs' two runs in the bottom of the third were aided by a pair of Cougar throwing errors. Sarah Beth Roberts started the inning by singling back up the middle before Layne Rainey beat out her sacrifice bunt attempt for a single before a throwing error advanced Roberts to third. Sarah Poteat then provided a sacrifice fly for the game's first run.

UTC's next batter Cheyenne Willis struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt but the throw to first base hit her in the back and scooted down the line allowing her to reach safely and Rainey to get to third. Just like Poteat, Stephanie Rieck provided a sacrifice fly to double Chattanooga's lead.

Hodgson hammered the very first pitch of the sixth inning well over the fence in left to cut the lead in half for the Cougars but the Lady Mocs followed suit with three home runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to stretch a 6-1 lead.

Last season the Cougars were sent to the consolation bracket in the opening round but responded with four straight wins to reach the tournament finals. CofC will look to make a similar run this season and will need four consecutive victories to be crowned champions.
