CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team will kick off the 2012-13 by hosting one of the most competitive tournaments in the country, the Cougar Classic, as CofC head coach Jamie Futrell announced the schedule today.
The Cougar Classic (Sept. 9-11), which will celebrate its 10th year anniversary this year will feature 10 of the top 15 teams from the 2012 NCAA Tournament, including each of the top five.
"We are thrilled to continue to host this great event," Futrell said. "This could well be the strongest field in collegiate golf this year."
The Cougars will host many of the traditional tournaments they have hosted in years past, but are also hosting a tournament at Briar's Creek Club March 25-26 on Johns Island.
"While challenging, our schedule is a little different than in recent years," Futrell said. "In addition to the events we host at Yeamans Hall, Kiawah and Pinehurst we have added a marquee tournament at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek. This tournament should compete with some of the best tournaments in the spring."
Another change will be the team playing two tournaments on the west coast which they have not done recently. The Cougars will travel to Palm Desert, Calif., Oct. 13-14 for the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate hosted by Wyoming and in the spring travel to Tucson, Ariz., March 15-16 for the Mountain View Collegiate, hosted by Kansas State.
The Southern Conference Championship will be held once again in Hilton Head, S.C. April 14-16 with the winner receiving the conference automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"I look forward to some of the change in venues," Futrell said. "I have several seniors on the team and it will give them an opportunity to see some new places."
