College of Charleston Defeats Gardner-Webb In Swimming Dual Meet

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Both the College of Charleston men's and women's swimming squads took home dual meet victories in the Cougars' final competition before the all-important CCSA Championships in February.

The men's squad beat Gardner-Webb by a score of 143-119, while the women won 135-124. The women were able to tally eight first-place finishes, while the men took nine.

Sophomore Sarah Boyle continued her strong season by winning the 100 back in 59.31, the 200 back in 2:07.31 and the 100 fly in 59.44. Boyle also swam the first leg of the 200-yard medley relay, joining with Liz Mooney, Alyssa Finn and Sarah Graif to earn a second-place time of 1:51.78.

Meredith Smith took first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.02 while Haley Horkey finished third (1:59.89) in that race.

Sarah Graif took home two top finishes in the 50 free (24.43) and the 100 free (53.24). Smith finished second in the 100 free (54.25), while Mary Frances Babrowicz took second in the 50 free (25.26) and third in the 100 free (54.74).

The Cougars swept the top three places of the 1650 free with Annie Berdusco (18:24.52), Sarah Kim (18:36.20) and Megan Melville (18:48.13) finishing first second and third.

Gracie Herlong picked up two second-place finishes in the 200 fly (2:11.09) and the 500 free (5:22.78).

The women also won the 200 free relay with Babrowicz, Horkey, Smith and Graif combining for a time of 1:39.28.

On the men's side, senior Matt Sherrier won three different events, including the 1650 free (16:38.81), 100 free (48.10) and 500 free (4:47.88). Matt's brother, David, took first place in the 200 free (1:43.90) and second place in the 500 free (4:48.89) and 50 free (21.85).

Greg Karel won the 50 free (21.82), while Pablo Ortiz won the 200 fly (1:55.68). Chris Verboncoeur finished first in the 100 fly (52.23).

Brantley Reynolds and Mike McCarthy picked up second-place finishes in the 100 breast (59.43) and the 100 back (53.47).

The men's team won both relays as Jackson Marine, Reynolds, Verboncoeur and Karel combined for a 1:35.61 mark in the 200 medley. Karel, Reynolds and both Sherriers swam a first-place time of 1:26.28 in the 200 free relay.

The Cougars will conclude the 2011-12 season at the CCSA Championships on Feb. 16-18 at the University of Georgia.
