Swimming and Diving Teams Fall to Gardner Webb

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston swimming and diving teams fell to Gardner Webb in Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association action on Sunday afternoon at the Stern Center. The Bulldogs clung to a narrow lead at the midway break but exceled in the ensuing events to put the meet out of reach.

The men fell by a 173-113 mark while the women succumbed to a 163-123 defeat.

Women's Highlights
Sarah Boyle, April Coyne, Gracie Herlong and Haley Horkey teamed to place second in the 400-meter medley relay with a 4:30.46 mark, narrowly missing first place by less than half a second.

Casey Sweeney placed second in the 800-meter freestyle (9:41.09).

Meredith Smith took second place in the 150-meter freestyle event with a 1:36.72 time.

Boyle was the victor in the 50-meter backstroke (31.51) and the 150-meter backstroke (1:45.94).

Coyne placed second in the 50-meter breaststroke at 31.28 as well as the 300-meter IM.

Herlong was the runner up of the 150-meter butterfly event (1:45.75).

Raquel Rudolph took second in the 50-meter freestyle (29.07).

Men's Highlights
The Cougars took second place in the 400-meter freestyle event with Jackson Marine, Brantley Reynolds, David Sherrier and Matt Sherrier.

Matt Sherrier championed the 150-meter freestyle (1:23.48) by more than a full second as well as the 400-meter freestyle (4:11.95).

The Cougars took the top two spots in the 50-meter freestyle with Patrick Jones (24.52) followed immediately by Greg Karel (24.69).

Jones was also the fastest in the 50-meter butterfly (26.13).

Karel, Eric Craig and the Sherrier brothers won the final event of the evening, the 400-meter freestyle relay, with a 3:34.92 mark.

The Cougars stay at home to host UNC Wilmington on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Stern Center. Admission to all CofC swimming and diving events is free to the public.
