CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The College of Charleston men's tennis team's NCAA Tournament run came up short as No. 15-ranked North Carolina defeated the Cougars, 4-0, in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship held on Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

The Tar Heels (14-7) advance to the second round where they will face No. 17-ranked Tennessee (15-13) for a trip to the Round of 16. UNC opened up the match by winning the doubles point on court three, 8-2, and court one, 8-1, to take the early 1-0 advantage.

The Cougars (18-4), who were making their first NCAA appearance since 2003 and second in program history, fell behind in singles as UNC claimed five of the first six sets. North Carolina's No. 6 player Oystein Steiro topped junior Billy Kenny (Pawley's Island, S.C.) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, as did Joey Burkhardt over sophomore Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile), 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, to go up 3-0.

No. 26-ranked Jose Hernandez clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over senior Mickael Trintignac (Le Cannet, France) at the top of the lineup.

Trintignac and senior Tom Delme (Hamoir, Belgium) played in their final collegiate match for the Cougars. Delme hung tough against No. 92-ranked Brennan Boyajian winning CofC's lone first set before the match was decided.

"North Carolina is a great team and played better than us today," CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. "I am so proud of the way we competed. This was a learning experience for our program that we will improve on. I am proud of our three seniors, Tom, Guga (Trintignac) and Chris (Toussaint), for the hard work they have put in and their commitment to getting our program back to the NCAAs. We have six returning players who will continue on this year's success next season."

The Cougars will continue postseason play individually as the No. 67-ranked doubles tandem of Trintignac and junior Kyle Parker (Richmond, Va.) automatically qualified for the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship to be held on May 23-28 at host University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The 32-team draw will be released after the team championship on May 22.

The duo became the first men's tennis players in program history to reach the individual national tournament in either singles or doubles.
