OMAHA, Neb. - Senior Sarah Nelson was one assist and one bucket from a triple-double as she guided the Creighton women's basketball team past Seton Hall, 70-50, on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Creighton moved into a tie for second place in the BIG EAST with the win, sitting at 18-10 overall and 12-4 in BIG EAST action. Seton Hall, meanwhile, fell to 16-11 on the season and 7-9 in conference play.
Both teams struggled from the floor through the first eight minutes as Seton Hall held a 10-5 lead with 12:00 remaining. Creighton appeared to find its shooting stroke first as the Bluejays got a three-ball from Nelson, followed by treys from freshman Lauren Works and finally from sophomore Marissa Janning to grab the lead (14-12) with 10:20 on the scoreboard.
The game remained close over the next five minutes, leaning slightly to the Pirates as Seton Hall led 19-18 (6:25). Seton Hall seemed poised to seize control with a 8-2 burst, extending its lead to its largest margin 27-20 with just over five minutes remaining.
Nelson would have none of that, dishing to Janning in the corner for a three-pointer to make it 27-23. Moments later she found senior McKenzie Fujan at the elbow for two. Down 28-25, Creighton scored the final four points on another jumper by Fujan and a easy layup down low for freshman Brianna Rollerson. Janning found Rollerson for the layup as she drove from left to right and wrapped a pass underneath the bucket. The Bluejays' 9-1 run gave Creighton a 29-28 lead at the half.
Creighton's roll continued through the first three minutes of the second half as the Bluejays pushed their lead to nine at 39-30. This time Nelson got things rolling by finding senior Alyssa Kamphaus for an layup, then Janning fed Fujan from downtown. Moments later it was Fujan paying it forward with an assist to sophomore Sammy Jensen, finally Janning created her own bucket with a pull-up jumper from 10 feet.
Seton Hall rallied to get within two at 39-37 (12:28), but Creighton scored 18 of the next 21 points to put the game out of reach. Nelson twice found Janning for open treys in the right corner to key the Bluejays final run.
Fujan led Creighton with 17 points, while Janning finished just a step back with 16 points. Nelson posted a career-high nine assists to go with 14 rebounds and eight points.
Seton Hall got a game-high 18 points from Ka-Deidre Simmons and 13 from Tabatha Richardson-Smith.
Creighton returns to action in its final regular-season road game of the year at Marquette on Saturday, March 1 at 2 pm. The game will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports 1.
