OMAHA, Neb. - Head coach Jim Flanery announced the return of former Bluejay Chevelle Herring to Creighton as a women's basketball assistant coach.

Herring served as an assistant coach at Midland University last season, where she worked for current Bluejay assistant Matt Fritsche.  Before coming to Midland, Herring coached at Benson High School (2010-11) and with the Omaha Crusaders AAU team (2011 Summer).  Herring led the South Dakota Attack, Elite AAU team this summer.

"I'm pleased to bring Chevy aboard, she is a talented young coach who has familiarity with our program and our staff," said Flanery.

A three-year starter for Creighton, Herring played her entire career under Flanery's direction (2005-10).  She closed her career with 1,098 points, 254 assists and 119 steals.  Following her junior season, Herring was an All-MVC (Missouri Valley Conference) Second Team selection as she led Creighton with 441 points.  She also earned a spot on the 2010 MVC All-Tournament Team, helping the Bluejays advance to the championship game.

"I'm very excited to return to my alma mater, I didn't think this opportunity would come as quickly as it has," said Herring.  "I've wanted to coach since high school and coming back to Creighton as we join the BIG EAST will be a thrilling challenge."

Herring graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelors of Arts in Public Relations in 2010 and is pursuing a Masters of Education in Leadership at Midland University.

Herring's hiring completes a series of reshuffling for the Jays following back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament.  After four seasons as a member of the women's basketball staff, Sara Cain left her role as the Director of Basketball Operations to pursue an advanced nursing degree.  Subsequently, nine-year coaching veteran Jenny Vickers will take over the Director of Basketball Operations role.  Earlier this summer, Fritsche filled the vacancy created when longtime assistant coach Steve Huber left Flanery's staff in April to accept the head coaching position at Drury College.
