McDermott Earns Eighth BIG EAST Weekly Honor

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton forward Doug McDermott has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the eighth time this season, the league office announced on Sunday. McDermott averaged 33.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while becoming the eighth man in NCAA history to surpass 3,000 career points.

The two-time All-American started his week with 22 points and 12 rebounds at Georgetown, but the best was yet to come.

Playing on Senior Night on Saturday in front of a school-record crowd (18,868) McDermott had a career-high 45 points to go with seven rebounds in an 88-73 win over Providence. He had 22 points at half (matching Providence's total), then added 23 more after the break. The 45 points were fifth-most in CU history (and most since 1985), as well as a CenturyLink Center Omaha record, while helping him become the third man ever with 3,000 points and 1,000 career rebounds.

He finished the game 17-for-25 from the field, including 5-of-7 three-pointers.

In the process, he passed Oscar Robertson and Hersey Hawkins and moved into seventh on the NCAA's all-time scoring list with 3,011 career points.

Overall, he shot 54.2 percent from the field (26-48), including 9-for-18 from three-point range (50 percent).

The eighth award is two more than the previous league record for a player in one season.
