WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team is tied for 17th out of 29 teams through the first round of the 2012 C&F Bank Intercollegiate, March 25. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the College of William & Mary, is being played at Kingsmill Resort's River Course (Par 71 / 6,831 yards) in Williamsburg, Va.
JMU shot a 14-over 298 in the opening round and is tied with Marquette for 17th. Missouri is the first-round leader at 2-under 282, two shots ahead of UNCG in second at even-par 284. Appalachian State is third at 1-over 285, with Old Dominion currently fourth at 4-over 288 and Radford rounding out the top five at 5-over 289.
Senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) is Madison's top player in a tie for 22nd at 1-over 72, with senior Chad Mozingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) next in a tie for 51st 3-over 74. Redshirt-junior Garrett Whitmore (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) is one shot back of Mozingo in a tie for 64th at 4-over 75, with freshman Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) at 6-over 77, tied for 94th. Senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) rounds out JMU's first day scoring at 7-over 78, tied for 106th. was the final finisher for JMU, tying for 82nd at 16-over 229. Emilio Cuartero of Missouri tied the tournament scoring record with his round of 5-under 66, one shot ahead of teammate Jace Long.
The Dukes will go off No. 10 starting at 12:30 p.m., playing with Marquette and Boston College.
