McDonald, Monk Finish in Top Five on Day One at ECAC Championships
BOSTON, Mass., March 3, 2012 - Junior multi-event athlete Jennifer Monk (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) totaled 3,540 points in the indoor pentathlon to finish fifth. Monk set a personal-best, finishing just 16 points below the JMU all-time record on day one at the ECAC indoor championships in Boston, Mass.
Also placing for the Dukes on day one was junior Marissa McDonald (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East). McDonald matched her personal-record set last weekend, leaping 5.94 meters (19'6.00") in the long jump competition. Her mark was good for third-place and earned six team points for JMU.
Advancing to tomorrow's finals in individual competition for JMU was junior Annie Reiner (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes). Reiner placed first in her heat grouping, third overall in the preliminary round, running the 1,000 meters in 2:54.89. Reiner joins the JMU 4X800-meter relay team in tomorrow's finals. The relay team finished in 9:00.39, good for third overall in the preliminaries.
McDonald also finished first in her heat grouping, running a 7.62-second, 60-meter dash. Her mark was second overall in the preliminary round. She finished ninth in the semifinal round.
Also competing in the first round of the 60-meter competition was sophomore Jordan Simmons (Plainfield, N.J./Bishop Ahr). She finished fifth in her heat with a time of 7.68. Her mark was good for 12th overall in the preliminary round. Simmons finished 10th in the semis.
The final day of competition at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center kicks off on Sunday with the pole vault competition. Results from Boston will be available on JMUSports.com shortly after the meet wraps up.
