RALEIGH, N.C., March 30, 2012 - The James Madison track and field team hit the ground running at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday. The Dukes had three athletes qualify for ECAC competition on day one of the two-day event which features over 2,000 high school and collegiate athletes.
Marissa McDonald (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) led the Dukes with two ECAC-qualifying times. McDonald finished second in the long jump competition, leaping 5.98 meters (19'7.5"), and ninth in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash competition. Her time of 11.94 seconds qualified her for the 100-meter finals tomorrow afternoon as well as being an ECAC qualifer.
Also qualifying for ECAC competition on day one were Ciarra Morris (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) (400-meter dash) and Jess Zozos (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) (10,000-meter run). Morris finished 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 55.60 while Zozos finished 21st, out of 48 runners in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:07.73.
Madison's sprint medley relay teams also finished in fourth and fifth places. The Dukes' team of Jaclyn Smith (Arlington,Va./Yorktown), Jaime Lott (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland), Brittany Wilhelm (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Morgan Sheaffer (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) finished in fourth place in a time of 4:09.61. The fifth-place team consisting of Jasmine Waddell (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional), Nicole Gilbert (Hanover, Mass./Hanover), Tiel Westbrook (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) and Kelsey Langton (Hamilton Square N.J./Notre Dame H.S.) ran the course in a time of 4:10.32
JMU had two athletes qualify for tomorrow's finals in the 100-meter hurdles. Jennifer Monk (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic) finished the event in 15th with a time of 14.69, and Waddell finished in 18th, crossing the line in 14.77.
Other top finishers for the Dukes include a seventh-place finish in flight four of the 5,000-meter run by Rachel Hagen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls), a 14th-place finish by Christianna Moss (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) in the Discus throw (41.18 meters (135'1")) and a 35th-overall and second-place finish in her section by Destiny Simmons (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) in the 400-meter dash.
