Volleyball Signs Pair of In-State Recruits

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball inked a pair of high school recruits when Brittany Lawrence and Marysa Wilkinson returned signed letters-of-intent on Wednesday. Both women are from Nebraska and will be freshmen in the fall of 2014.

Lawrence is a 6-foot-3 middle blocker from North Platte, Neb., where she attends St. Patrick's High School. Last year she led the Lady Irish to a 30-3 record and finished with 400 kills, 117 blocks and 49 aces. She is already a two-time Class C-2 all-state pick at St. Pat's, where she is coached by Shelly Byrn.

"You can't teach 6'3"," noted CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "We really were attracted to Brittany's physical skill set. She's obviously a very tall kid. We think she's got a great arm, and she's athletic. She's played minimal club ball, but played for a well-coached high school team at a small school. We think she's a kid that's going to develop significantly during her time at Creighton. She fits the mold of the high-character, high-energy people we look for."

Hailing from Lincoln, Neb., and Southwest High School, Wilkinson stands 6-foot tall and can play outside hitter, middle blocker or on the right side. Wilkinson has been named second-team all-state as both a sophomore and junior. As a junior she ranked fourth in Class A with 3.9 kills per set and fourth with a .351 hitting percentage. She also paced her team with 61 blocks while helping it to a seventh straight state tourney appearance. During her sophomore season as a prep, Wilkinson led her team with 345 kills, 121 blocks and a .334 hitting percentage. Wilkinson also plays with the Nebraska Juniors club team.

"Marysa is a kid we had at camp a couple of summers ago and she really impressed us," said Booth. "She's highly athletic with a great arm and we love her versatility as a hitter. I think you could see her in the middle at Creighton, but you also could see her at either pin. She's done that for her high school team this year. Getting to work with a kid at camp you get to know their personality and we just really were impressed with who she is as a person."

Ranked 10th nationally in the RPI, the 2013 Creighton team (18-6, 9-3 BIG EAST) played its final BIG EAST road matches of the season this weekend when it visits St. John's on Friday and Seton Hall on Saturday.
