NEWARK, N.J. --- The University of North Dakota soccer team's season concluded Saturday with a 4-2 loss to top-seed Utah Valley in the semifinals of the Great West Conference Tournament.

In its third semifinal appearance in three seasons in the GWC tournament, the Sioux fell short of its goal to reach the finals for a second consecutive season to give them an opportunity of a championship but went out with a strong effort.

"I am so proud of the way our team battled today," head coach Kristen Gay said. "We went toe to toe with Utah Valley and truly left everything on the field.

"I want to thank our three seniors for the sacrifices and contributions they have made to our Fighting Sioux family. They will be missed."

The Fighting Sioux season concludes with a 6-9-3 record.

UND outshot the Wolverines 20-15 in the game and got out to a quick start with plenty of pressure in the offensive zone and was rewarded with the game's first goal.

Senior Rachael Loomis (Fargo, N.D.) connected on a pass to junior Rhaya Ballon (Rogers, Minn.) for her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 14th minute.

The Wolverines went on the attack though scoring four consecutive goals including two to close out the first half to take a lead into the halfway break.

Jamie Lyons and Natalie Young scored to give the Wolverines the lead they wouldn't relinquish in the 23th and 26th minutes, respectively.

Lexi Robison would open the second-half scoring at 55:21 and Young would add her second goal of the game at 81:58.

Sophomore defender Kaylynn Burgess (Henderson, Nev.) scored her first collegiate goal to cut the lead to 4-2 late in the second half.

Loomis picked up her second assist of the game and concludes her collegiate career with 75 points, fourth best all-time by a Sioux.

Freshman Kristi Hestdalen (Pierre, S.D.) made seven saves in the losing effort.
