HAMMOND, La. — Haylee Staton and Alyssa Vordenbaum combined on a one-hitter and Nikki Goff hit a two-run homer to help UTSA salvage a weekend split at Southeastern Louisiana with a 4-0 victory on Saturday.
Staton (9-5) allowed just one hit in four innings, while Vordenbaum struck out four in the final three frames for her first save of the season.
Meanwhile, Siera Sproul added an RBI single and Molly Fichtner went 2-for-4 for the Roadrunners, who improved to 17-21 overall and 7-5 in Southland Conference play. The Lady Lions fell to 9-29 (2-10 SLC).
Both teams were held without a hit until Fichtner led off the top of the third with a single up the middle and that was followed by a base knock by Megan Low. A Caitlyn Ivy sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base before Goff gave UTSA a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to right.
Katie Doyle opened the fourth with Southeastern Louisiana’s lone hit of the afternoon, a single up the middle, but Staton retired the next three batters to end the threat.
Courtney Buchman led off the sixth with a single and came around to score on Sproul’s two-out hit to left to double the advantage and Low opened the final frame with a walk before Goff delivered a two-run blast to left her fourth round-tripper of the season, which provided the final four-run margin.
After earning the Lion Lions' victory in Friday's opener, Kenna Terry entered the game in relief of starter Vicki Honeycutt after she walked four in 1.1 innings. Terry, who came into today with a 3-0 record and 0.67 ERA in three all-time starts against the Roadrunners, fell to 3-13 after surrendering all four runs on six hits over the final 5.2 stanzas.
UTSA will return home on Tuesday, April 17, for a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Houston Baptist (13-24). The Huskies handed the Roadrunners a 3-2 setback on April 4.
