SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will be back in action at 5 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels north to take on I-35 rival Texas State in a doubleheader at Bobcat Field.

The Roadrunners (20-22, 9-5 SLC) have won eight of their last 10 Southland Conference games, including a sweep of UT Arlington last weekend, to climb into fourth place in the league standings.

Junior Haylee Staton went 3-0 with a 0.76 ERA in 18.1 innings of work last week to improve her season record to 12-5. After picking up the win against Houston Baptist on Tuesday, the Austin native tossed a two-hit shutout and recorded 11 strikeouts in the opening game of the series with the Mavericks. It was her third shutout and third game with double-digit strikeouts this spring.

Meanwhile, fellow junior Samantha Beeson provided much of the offense against UTA over the weekend. The Austin native had a run-scoring double in UTSA’s 1-0 victory on Friday night and drove in a run with a triple a day later. In four games last week, Beeson had a .455 batting average (5-for-11) and notched at least one hit in each contest.

The Bobcats enter Tuesday’s doubleheader with a 29-15 overall record and they sit atop the Southland standings with a 12-2 mark. Texas State has won seven of its last eight contests and is 15-1 at Bobcat Field this season.

A dominant pitching staff that owns 19 shutouts has played a key role in the Bobcats’ success. Chandler Hall and Anne Marie Taylor each sport an ERA under 2.00, while Hall’s 17 wins rank second in the conference.

Anna Hernandez leads the offense with a .325 average and, along with Hall, has 19 RBIs.

Texas State leads the all-time series, 36-32, but the Roadrunners have won three of the last four meetings. UTSA took two of three games from the Bobcats last season in San Marcos, including a 5-1 eight-inning victory on April 29 in which it tied an NCAA record with four consecutive home runs.
