Ft. Myers, Fla. (May 2, 2012) - The FIU baseball team (26-19) picked up a much-needed victory against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, 7-4, Wednesday night at Swanson Stadium.
Christian Malbrough pitched four scoreless innings of relief for his first win of the season. Mike Gomez came in for the ninth and secured his team and Sun Belt leading 12th save of the season.
The Panthers struck first in the top of the first on consecutive RBI singles by Tyler James Shantz and Kirsch. The lead was short-lived as the Eagles tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning.
FIU plated two in the top of the third for a 4-2 advantage. Kirsch delivered a two-RBI single scoring Martinez and Henry.
After FGCU made it a 4-3 game in the third, Martinez added a run for the Panthers on an RBI single scoring Bermudez.
In the top of the seventh, Henry unleashed his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot to deep left field to give the Panthers a 7-4 cushion.
The Panthers return home for their final home series of the 2012 season to take on the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders starting Friday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. at FIU Baseball Stadium.
