MIAMI (May 2, 2012) - FIU Head Coach Richard Pitino announced on Wednesday the signing of Tymell Murphy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to the men's basketball program.
"We are fired up about the addition of Tymell Murphy," Pitino said. "Anytime you have an opportunity to bring a student-athlete in from a national championship program, you are fortunate. Tymell can play multiple positions and will be able to provide necessary leadership. He will be a great asset to FIU and our basketball program."
Murphy is a 6-foot-5 guard, who spent last season at South Plains College (Levelland, Texas). Murphy started every game for the Texans during their run to the NJCAA Championship that culminated with the first undefeated season for an NJCAA team since 1998. He averaged 9.9 points and 6.6 rebounds-per-game. Prior to his time at South Plains, Murphy played at Mohawk Valley C.C. (Utica, N.Y.) where he averaged 16.5 points-per-game, while shooting 51.9 percent from the floor (193-of-372).
A graduate of Marcy Avenue (Brooklyn, N.Y), Murphy averaged 26.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists for the Cougars.
Murphy joins Dee Lewis to comprise the 2012 signing class.
The spring signing period continues through May 16.
