Balanced Attack Leads Big Green to Victory over Brown, 3-0

HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth volleyball team used a balanced attack in which four players had at least five kills to defeat Brown on Friday, 3-0. It marked the Big Green's ninth sweep of the season. The win improved Dartmouth to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in the Ivy League. The 15 wins are one more than the team had last season and the most since 2007 when the Big Green finished 15-9. The loss dropped the Bears to 6-18 overall and 2-11 in the conference.

Senior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led the team with nine kills and a match-high 15 digs. Senior Annie Villanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.) recorded eight kills, while hitting .389. Freshman Lucia Pohlman (Mill Valley, Calif.) tallied eight kills, four assists and five digs. Junior Alissa Santa Maria (Yorba Linda, Calif.) distributed the ball well with 30 assists and added eight digs.

In the opening stanza, the teams played back-and-forth with Brown holding a 21-20 lead late in the set. The Big Green responded with four straight points on a kill by Villanueva, two kills by Baird and an attack error by the Bears' Thea Derrough to give Dartmouth three set points at 24-21. Brown fought off two, but Villanueva ended the first with kill, 25-23, off an assist from Santa Maria.

Dartmouth jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the second and the Bears played catch up the rest of set. Maddie Lord helped close the gap to 22-18 with three service aces, but the Big Green held on to win the second, 25-20. In the third, Dartmouth's front line provided the defense the team needed to pull out the victory. In the set, the Big Green had eight block assists highlighted by two each from Villanueva and sophomore Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.) With the defense clicking, Dartmouth won the third set, 25-21, to take the match.

Taylore Bantle led the Bears with 10 kills on 20 attempts, and Annika Gliottone was the team leader in digs with 13. Spencer McAndrews did most of the setting and totaled 28 assists.

For the contest, Dartmouth hit .263 compared to .121 for Brown. The Big Green recorded eight service aces and the Bears had four.

Dartmouth returns to the court for its final match of the season on Saturday at 5 p.m. when it hosts Ivy League Champion Yale. It will be Senior Night for the four Big Green seniors: Baird, Villanueva Amber Bryant (Ashburn, Va.) and Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas).
