The Armory Release

NEW YORK – On Sunday, The Armory named Columbia sophomore sprinter Marvellous Iheukwumere as its women’s Armory College Athlete of the Year and tabbed senior Kyle Merber, sophomore Harry McFann and junior Uju Ofoche as 2012 Armory All-Stars.

“I am so happy for Marvellous,” Columbia Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Willy Wood said. “She had a tremendous season for us and was instrumental in our Ivy League Championship. She works so hard and is remarkably humble. I am very pleased see her achievements recognized by the outside world. In addition, Uju, Kyle and Harry being named to the All-Star team at the Armory just highlights what an amazing indoor season we had.”

Iheukwumere was a 2012 Ivy League Indoor Track & Field champion in the 200m dash with a time of 24.61 and took second place in the 60m dash with a time of 7.62. She was an All-Ivy League first-team selection for the 200m dash and a second-team honoree for the 60m dash. Ihuekwumere set the school record in the 60m dash at The Armory on Feb. 3 when she clocked a 7.56 in the prelims of the 2012 New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Merber was named a 2012 Armory All-Star for the men’s 1,000m run. His 2:22.52 that took first place in the 2012 Great Dane Classic on Jan. 20 at The Armory was the second-fastest 1,000m run in the Ivy League this year. That time was the third-best in Columbia history. He was a two-time champion at 2012 Ivy League Indoor Heps, winning the 1 mile run (4:21.11) and running the anchor leg for the Lions’ conference champions Distance Medley Relay (9:52.01) with Adam Behnke, Byron Jones and Daniel Everett. Merber also ran the second sub-four-minute mile of his career at The Armory, crossing the line in 3:59.44 at the Columbia Last Chance meet on March 2.

McFann was recognized as an all-star for the men’s 800m run. He took third place in the 800m at 2012 Ivy League Indoor Heps with a time of 1:51.28 and ran the second leg of the Lions’ conference champion 4x800m relay squad that finished in 7:34.99. McFann set a new personal best in the 800m and posted the third-best time in school history on March 2 when he clocked a 1:49.66 at the Columbia Last Chance Meet at The Armory. He also ran the third leg of the 4x400 relay team that set the school record of 4:02.83 at the 2012 Millrose Games.

Ofoche received all-star status for the women’s long jump. Her leap of 6.10m at the Metropolitan Indoor Track & Field Championships Jan. 26-27 at The Armory was good for second place and stood as the second-best mark in the Ivy League. Ofoche defended her conference indoor long jump title at the 2012 Ivy League Indoor Heps with a jump of 5.95m, becoming the first Columbia jumper to win back-to back Ivy League long jump titles.
