The 49ers women's soccer team recently completed their eight-game spring exhibition schedule. The 49ers played UNC Greensboro, Appalachian State, Pfeiffer, Winthrop, Gardner-Webb, South Carolina, Georgia and Elon this spring.
"We finished every spring game stronger than our opponent," Charlotte coach John Cullen said. "This is a testament to all the hard work that our players have put in. I would like to give a tremendous amount of credit to our strength and conditioning coach Stacy Hummer for all her hard work in getting our team fit and ready to play."
This spring was important for the 49ers as they have graduated 17 players over the past two seasons so a team with a lot of freshmen and sophomores were able to gain valuable playing experience.
"This spring, we got good leadership from our core group of returning players Alex Kubrick, Sarah Ann Waugh, Brooke Mulloy, Carrie Dail, Dakota Olson and Taylor Rovito," Cullen said. "It was also exciting seeing the emergence of young players Jennifer Lee, Taylor Dulaney, Darby Broeker, Hannah Carlson, Amanda Jones, Sara Trexler, Annie McHenry, Dana Robertson and Jess Ryan."
Returning starter junior Lacey McGowan was not able to play this spring due to off-season surgery.
"Lacey McGowan has been working very hard in her recovery from off-season surgery in her bid to get back for the fall season," Cullen said.
The 49ers return to action when they host UNC Asheville in an exhibition game, Saturday, August 11 at 2 pm. The 49ers begin the 2012 regular-season at the College of Charleston, Saturday, August 18 at 7 pm.
