McMunn Sets School Record as Women's Lacrosse Wins at Temple 14-13
PHILADELPHIA (4/4/12) - Freshman Erin McMunn set a Princeton women's lacrosse record for assists in a game to lead the No. 18-ranked Tigers to a 14-13 win over Temple on Wednesday, April 4 in North Philly.
McMunn earned six assists in the game and scored one goal. The previous record for assists in a game was five with Lauren Simone '02, Melissa Cully '98 and Crista Samaras '99 each having five in a game during their Princeton careers.
Another big contribution on offense came from junior Charlotte Davis. Davis scored three goals and added two assists for a career-best outing of five points. Junior Jaci Gassaway and sophomore Sarah Lloyd both recorded hat tricks. Senior Cassie Pyle had four points on two goals and two assists, while freshman Erin Slifer had two tallies.
Princeton held an 8-5 lead in the second half, but a 7-1 run by Temple put Princeton in danger as the Owls took a 12-9 lead at 15:55. A five-goal spark by the Tigers gave them back the lead and they'd hang on for the win.
Pyle opened the game with a goal at 26:46 and Slifer followed up off a feed from McMunn to help the Tigers take a 2-0 lead at 21:29.
Temple went on a 3-0 run to take the short-lived lead at 15:41, before McMunn set up Princeton's next two goals. The first was by Gassaway and the second by Slifer, which allowed the Tigers to take back the lead, 4-3 at 13:12.
Temple's goalie Tess Bishop kept her team's deficit to just one with a big save on a free-position chance by Pyle before Stephanie Markunas tallied her second of the day to knot the game at 4-4 less than a minute later.
A turnover by Temple resulted in a quick clear and goal as Pyle set up Gassaway and 37 seconds later Davis gave Princeton its first two-goal lead since 21:29.
Markunas collected a first half hat trick at 7:22, to make it a 6-5 game. On the other end, Bishop made another nice save on a free-position shot by junior Sam Ellis two minutes later.
With time winding down Temple worked the ball around waiting for a good shot. Princeton was called for a foul in the arc and freshman goalie Annie Woehling made a terrific save with 11.6 seconds left on an eight-meter attempt to keep the Tigers ahead at halftime.
Two goals in the first three minutes of the second half gave Princeton an 8-5 lead, the first three-goal lead in the game.
Temple went off scoring three straight to knot the game at 8-8 within 1:17. Helping the Owls along was the change in draw controls from the first to the second. Princeton won nine of 11 in the first half, but Temple won three of five in the first five minutes of the second and won a total of 11 of 17 in the second half.
A goal by Lloyd at 21:32 sandwiched the Temple run as she scored on a quick clear and feed from Davis.
The Owls would score four more in span of 5:04 to take the 12-9 lead with 15:55 on the clock.
The Tigers wouldn't go away as they responded with five straight to regain the lead 14-12 at 3:42. Gassaway sparked the run and McMunn scored her first of the day right out in front off a feed from Davis. Davis followed up with an eight-meter goal to tie the game, and McMunn would set up Lloyd for the Tiger' next two goals.
Keelin Hood ended the Tigers' run at 2:55 and Temple won the ensuing draw control. However, Karly Cohen threw the ball out of bounds on a bad pass which put the ball back into the stick of the Tigers with 1:45 remaining.
Princeton held on to the ball for the remainder for the game, passing it around on its offensive end before the horn sounded.
Princeton outshot Temple, 27-22. The Tigers had one more ground ball, 12-11, and one more draw control, 15-14, than the Owls.
Woehling made five saves in net for Princeton, while Bishop stopped eight for the Owls who drop to 7-5 overall.
