Open Crew Completes Season With Victory Over Tennessee; Ivy Sprints Awaits
The seventh-ranked Princeton open crew completed another strong regular season by defeating Tennessee in all three NCAA Championship-format races Saturday morning on Bud Smith Memorial Race Course on Lake Carnegie. The Tigers can now turn their focus completely to defending their 2011 Ivy League title.
The Tiger varsity eight moved to 8-2 on the season with a nearly 10-second victory over the Lade Volunteers in the final race of the morning regatta. Princeton took the win in 6:44.1, while Tennessee finished second in 6:53.9.
The second varsity also moved to 8-2, though it proved to be a much tougher race. Princeton won in 7:06.1, 3.1 seconds ahead of Tennessee. The varsity four completed a perfect 10-0 season with a strong performance on Lake Carnegie. The Tigers won in 7:47.6, while Tennessee came in at 8:04.0.
Princeton now turns its attention to the first ever Ivy League Sprints, which will be held May 13 on Cooper River. Now only are the Tigers the reigning champion in the varsity eight, but Princeton also won the EAWRC titles in the second varsity, varsity four and third varsity competitions. The Tigers will likely be seeded first in all four events, as each boat went undefeated against Ivy competition.
