AMES, Iowa - Royce White is heading to the NBA. The national newcomer of the year, All-American and All-Big 12 First-Team pick found out tonight with a group of supporters at the Sukup Basketball Complex.

The place erupted when White was selected by the Houston Rockets in the first round as the 16th pick in the entire draft. He becomes the ninth Cyclone to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft.

White announced his intentions to leave school early and begin a professional career in basketball shortly after the 2011-12 season ended. White was one of the primary reasons for Iowa State's resurgence on the college hoops scene last year, as the Cyclones posted a 23-11 mark while advancing to the third round of the NCAA Championships.

The Minneapolis, Minn., native was the only player in the nation to lead his team in scoring (13.4), rebounding (9.3), assists (5.0), steals (1.1) and blocks (0.9) last season. His season rebounding (316) and assist (170) totals rank in Iowa State's top-10 and the power forward was the only player from a power-six conference to rank in the top-100 nationally in rebounds (34th- 9.3), FG pct. (36th- 53.4) and assists (57th- 5.0).

White is the 35th former Cyclone to be drafted in the NBA and the first since Craig Brackins was selected in the 2010 draft. Iowa State has had eight NBA draft picks since the Big 12 was formed in 1996-97, the third-best total in the league.
