The Central Michigan soccer program will welcome 12 freshmen this fall as it embarks on a quest for its third MAC title in four seasons.
12 in 2012: Soccer Program Announces Freshman Class

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan soccer program has added 12 freshmen to its 2012 roster as it will seek its third Mid-American Conference title in four years.

Emily Basten (Madison, Wis./William Fremd), Michelle Brownlee (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown), Maddie Bunnell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Milford Senior), Christen Chiesa (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park), Megan Garner (Cleveland, Ohio/Avon), Eliza Van de Kerkhove (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pinckney Community), Taylor Potts (Toronto, Ontario/Dunbarton), Danielle Rotheram (Toronto, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic SS), Ali Russo (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central), Josie Seebeck (Montgomery, Ala./Ramstein (Germany)), Julia Wood (Cincinnati, Ohio/Fairfield) and Marissa Woodliff (Asuncion, Paraguay/Dearborn (Mich.)) will join head coach Neil Stafford as his first full recruiting class.

Emily Basten ... 5'7" ... Madison, Wis./William Fremd

High School: Three-time all-conference selection ... named to 2012 IHSSCA All-Sectional team and Daily Herald All-Area first team ... earned Most Valuable Player honors of varsity squad following senior season ... 2012 IHSA Scholastic Achievement Award winner and All-Academic Mid-Suburban league selection ... captain of varsity squad during senior season and of club team for three years ... played for Hoffman United Soccer Club from U8-U18 under coach Kim Crowe ... high school coach was Steve Keller.

Personal: Competed nationally and internationally in Tae Kwon Do ... second-degree black belt and seven time Illinois State Champion gold medalist ... AAU National Tournament gold medalist ... also participated in US Open competition. 

  Michelle Brownlee ... 5'7" ... Middletown, Ohio/Middletown

High School: Two-time All-GMC first team ... also earned All-GMC second team honors in 2010 ... named 2012 Defensive Player of the Year ... four-time All-Southwest Academic choice and All-GMC Academic selection ... named to the Division I Southwest District team ... tied school record for the most assists per game ... played club soccer for Cincinnati United Premier for four years under coach John Mers ... earned four letters in soccer, three in cheerleading and two in track and field.

Personal: Spent all four years of high school on honor roll ... voted to 2012 homecoming court by classmates ... chose CMU over Purdue, Indiana State, Toledo, Kentucky, Florida and Virginia.

  Maddy Bunnell ... 5'7" ... Cincinnati, Ohio/Milford Senior

High School: Named All-FAVC first team following senior season ... also named Cincinnati All-City goalkeeper in 2012 ... earned second-team All-FAVC honors three times ... helped lead team to four-straight conference championships, a 2011-12 district championship and regional finals appearance ... also qualified for district finals in 2009-10 season ... was a four-time FAVC Academic Honors selection. ... set schools records for most consecutive shutouts in a season (six), most total shutouts in a season (11) and most wins in a season (17) ... played club soccer for Cincinnati Soccer Alliance Premier and Elite teams for nine years under coach Alex Rawlings ... earned three letters in soccer and one in basketball ... chose CMU over Belmont University and Stephen F. Austin. 


Christen Chiesa ... 5'5" ... Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park

High School: Named to the Class AA-Section 1 All-Section team three times ... was selected to the PSCA/Brine All-State team following senior season ... also earned NSCAA All-Region team honors in 2011 ... earned Class AA All-WPIAL honors in 2010 and 2011 ... named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette South High School Girls Soccer All-Star team ... led her team to four Section 1 championship appearances ... also helped team win 2008 Class AA WPIAL championships ... played at the Kuban U-19 Spring Soccer Tournament in Sochi, Russa with Regional I team .. varsity team captain in 2010 and 2011 ... earned four letters in soccer and two letters in basketball ... played club soccer for Century United Club (U14-U16) and Beading United Club (U17-U18) under coach Gregg Day.

Personal: Class salutatorian ... member of National Honor Society ... served as NHS Treasurer in 2011-12 ... was also South park Executive Vice President during senior year ... earned the SPHS Department Award for Science in senior year ... spent three years as a Interact Board Member and earned Academic High Honors all four years.

  Megan Garner ... 5'5" ... Cleveland, Ohio/Avon

High School: Two-time All-West Shore Conference first team ... named all-conference second team in 2011 ...  earned All-Lorain County first team twice and honorable mention honors twice ... named Avon High School Most Valuable Offensive Player ... helped team win three conference championships and three district championships ... played club soccer for Cleveland United Soccer Club under Joe Raduka from 2006-11 and Cleveland Internationals under coach Zdravko Papovic from 2011-12 ... helped Internationals win 2012 Ohio North State Team championships ... won Ohio North State Cup Championship in 2008 and 2010 ... scored 43 career goals and dished out 22 career assists ... varsity team went 55-16-8 during four years ... was team captain of 2011 squad ... earned four letters in soccer, one in track and field and one in cheerleading ... chose CMU over Evansville and Miami (Fla.). 


Eliza Van de Kerkhove ... 5'7" ... Ann Arbor, Mich./Pinckney Community

High School: Three-time KLAA All-Conference selection and two-time All-District and All-County player ... named second-team All-State in 2010 ... named Most Valuable Player of varsity squad following sophomore season ... finished with 20 goals and 26 assists in three years of competition ... four-time All-Academic selection ... won a MHSAA State Championship title in 4x400 relay and earned all-state honors in 4x800 relay ... named team captain for senior season ... earned four letters in soccer, three in track and field and two in cross country ... played club soccer for Michigan Hawks ECL team for two years under coach Derek Williford ... picked CMU over Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cornell, Iowa and Grand Valley State. 

  Taylor Potts ... 5'7" ... Toronto, Ont./Dunbarton

High School: Four-year varsity letter winner ... named captain of squad for senior season ... scored six header goals during the 2011 campaign ... led team in goals during same season ... named Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 2012 ... also earned basketball team MVP honors senior year ... played club soccer for Pickering Soccer Club under coach Paul Deabreau from 2007-09 and again in 2012 ... also played for Newmarket United under coaches Connie Mercer and Mark Marshall in 2010-11 and the Wexford Wolverines under coach Vito T from 2003-06.

  Danielle Rotheram ... 5'3" ... Toronto, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic SS

High School: Helped lead team to 2011 Provincial League Championships and Ontario/Quebec Challenge Cup ... team won the 2010 Canadian National Championship ... won first Ontario Cup and Provincial League Championships in 2010 ... was honored by the City of Pickering and Durham Region in 2011 ... also qualified for the Ontario Cup finals in three straight seasons from 2008-10 ... averaged 20 goals per season for club team ... played club soccer for Pickering Soccer Club for seven years. 

  Ali Russo ... 5'4" ... Kalamazoo, MIch./Kalamazoo Central

High School: Twice earned Southwest Michigan Athletic All-Conference honors ... named to the Michigan All-District team in 2010 and 2011 ... also named to the Kalamazoo Gazette All-Area team in 2010-11 ... selected as team captain for squad during junior and senior seasons ... 2011-12 Super Y National ODP '94 selection ... named 2011 Super Y-League North American Finals U17 All-Tournament team ... scored 46 career goals and dished out 26 career assists, including 23 goals and nine assists during senior season ... two-time Division II All-State Team selection in swimming ... four-time All-Conference selection in swimming ... earned four varsity letters in soccer and swimming and one in basketball ... National Honor Society member.

Josie Seebeck ... 5'4" ... Montgomery, Ala./Ramstein (Germany)

High School: Member of 2012 European Tournament Champions squad ... named All-European Tournament MVP ... named All-European and All-Regional by Stars and Strips in 2012 ... two time Stars and Strips All-European and All-Regional selection ... scored 20 goals and dished out 16 assists as a senior after scoring 14 goals and tallying 26 assists as a junior ... team captain of Ramstein varsity squad in 2011 ... honorable mention All-MET selection as a freshman for McLean High School in Washington, D.C. by the Washington Post ... played for the European ODP team from 2009-2012 ... played for the National Super Y Team in Tampa, Fla., in 2009 ... team captain of the McLean MPS Strikes club team from 2007-09 ... also played club soccer for Clyde Watson FSV Jagersberg from 2009-2012 under coach Ralph Zimmerman.

  Julia Wood ... 5'1" ... Cincinnati, Ohio/Fairfield

High School: Named Second-Team All-Great Miami Conference in 2010 and 2011 ... helped lead team to a GMC Championship in 2011 ... finished 2011 campaign with nine goals and four assists to finish 12th in GMC in scoring ... was selected as the team captain during senior campaign ... was selected to play on the ODP Ohio South state team from 2007-10 and part of the ODP Regional pool in 2010 ... played club soccer for Cincinnati United Premier under coaches John Mers and Scott Rodgers.

Personal: Received the 2011 Joe Nuxhall Scholarship awarded by the Fairfield Community Foundation ... chose CMU over Toledo, Northern Kentucky and Tiffin University. 

  Marissa Woodliff ... 5'5" ... Asuncion, Paraguay/Dearborn (Mich.)

High School: Named Western Way Athletic All-Conference ... MHSSCA Division I All-District team selection ... helped lead team to League and District team championships ... also earned Dearborn All-City honors ... scored 20 goals and dished out five assists in 2012 ... captain of varsity squad for two years ... played club soccer for the Michigan Hawks for nine years ... selected CMU over Western Michigan.
