Athens, Ga. - The Runnin' Bulldogs accumulated 88 points on day one of the 2012 CCSA Championships, currently standing in 7th place with two days of competition remaining.
Gardner-Webb is in the thick of a competitive race, as they trail third place UNF by just 36 points entering Friday's slate of races.
The Gardner-Webb women grabbed six finals swims during Thursday morning's prelims session, including three of the Top 8 spots in the 200 IM.
In the 500 Free, junior Liz Van Halsema (Charlotte, N.C.) took 13th place for the Runnin' Bulldogs with a season best time of 5:05.22 in earning valuable points for her team.
Byrum led the way, finishing 3rd with a personal best time of 2:04.09. With that performance, the freshman recorded the second-fastest 200 IM all-time for GWU and the fastest ever by a freshman.
Wiley followed in 6th, clocking in at 2:06.24. The freshman's time of 2:05.62 in prelims marked both a personal best and the sixth fastest time in program history. Kempf also earned a Top 8 finish for Gardner-Webb, moving up in finals to finish 7th with a time of 2:07.49. The sophomore recorded a personal best time of 2:06.99 during morning prelims.
Sophomore Samantha Shelley (Wilmington, Del.) moved up in finals to finish 11th in the event, setting a new personal best at 2:06.87.
In the 50 Free, Gardner-Webb got a 12th place finish from Mary O'Doherty (Charlotte, N.C.), who recorded a personal best time of 23.89 in the event. With the race, O'Doherty ranks 4th all-time for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Sophomore Anna Springer (Snellville, Ga.) gave GWU a 15th place finish in the event, finishing with a time of 24.34. Springer recorded a season best time of 24.29 during the morning prelims session.
Gardner-Webb closed the night with a 4th place finish in the 400 Medley relay, as Laurenn Singleton, Byrum, O'Doherty, and Jenna Ballinger teamed up to finish in a GWU season best time of 3:47.67. The team's time also ranks fourth all-time at Gardner-Webb in the event.
