NEW YORK - Eight Columbia fencers will make their way to Ohio State for the 2012 NCAA Chanpionships, beginning Thursday, March 22 and going until Sunday, March 25.
Three Columbia men and five Columbia will vie for NCAA Fencing's top honor this weekend. Michael Josephs, Will Spear (men's sabre), Alen Hadzic (men's epee), Essane Diedro, Sammy Roberts (women's sabre), D'Meca Homer (women's foil), Lydia Kopecky and Diana Tsinis (women's epee) will represent Columbia among the 144 fencers at the four-day event.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination 15-touch bouts for first, second and third places. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off.
The women will fence first, beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 22. The final round of the women's competition will take place on Friday, March 23 at 9:30 a.m.
The men's competition starts on Saturday, March 24 at 10 a.m. The men's finals will take place on Sunday, March 25 at 9:30 a.m.
