CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Virginia Military Institute has been named the winner of the Big South Conference’s annual Institutional Sportsmanship Award for the 2009-10 athletic season, it was announced today by the League office. VMI receives the honor for the fifth consecutive year and has claimed the honor all five years of the award’s existence.
The overall winner is determined on a system recognizing the highest percentage of the maximum possible points an institution is capable of achieving for each team award. The team awards were voted on by Big South student-athletes following each Conference championship.
VMI, which was honored with five team sportsmanship awards in 2009-10, was tops among the Big South membership with a 35.64 percentage of the maximum points received in its sponsored League sports. VMI was voted by Big South student-athletes as the top sportsmanship team in women’s cross country, football (co-winner), women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and baseball in 2009-10. Liberty University finished second with a 30.87 percentage, followed by Gardner-Webb University at 26.58 percent.
