LEXINGTON, Va. - The VMI rifle program claimed victory in its first home match of the season with the men's squad garnering the top point total in a match with visiting Indiana University (Pa.) held last Saturday, Oct.17, at Kilbourne Hall in Lexington.
The men's team of Jason Morgan (Lynchburg, Va.), Clayton Melton (St. Louis, Mo.), John Krahling (Hamlin, N.Y), and Travis Travis (Limestone, Tenn.) took top honors with a total team score of 4159 points.
The VMI men were trailed by the VMI "mixed" team with 3,954 points, IUP with 3,856 points, and the VMI women's team with 3,786 points.
The match was the first home fall competition Kilbourne Hall had hosted since undergoing renovations last year.
In smallbore competition, Morgan topped all scored with a mark of 535 followed while top air rifle point honors went to Melton with a mark of 529.
The VMI mixed team comprised of William Splees (Oxford, N.C.), Quentin Sweetser (Annapolis, Md.), Mitchell Robbins (Blythewood, SC), and Christopher Schmeelk (Arlington, Va.) netted a total team score 3964 - shooting a 1955 in smallbore and 2029 in air rifle.
Schmeek was the top scorer among the "mixed" squad with a 516 in smallbore and 520 in air rifle.
VMI resumes action this Saturday with another home match against University of Sciences in Philadephia. Competition at Kilbourne Hall will begin at 8 a.m.
