VMI Women's Soccer Announces 2012 Recruiting Class

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI women’s soccer has announced its 2012 recruiting class, according to information released by the program Friday.

The class consists of eight players, five of whom hail from Virginia while one player apiece comes to Lexington from the states of Maryland, Wisconsin and West Virginia. There are multiple positions represented as well, including two goalkeepers in the group of talented freshmen.

Capsules on each of the players appear below.

Meredith Baldasare, Midfield, Williamsburg, Va./Bruton

Four-year letterwinner for Bruton High School…three-year team MVP…First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region (2012)…Second Team All-District (2011)…All-District Honorable Mention (2010)…third-leading scorer in TCIS District (2009)…led team in scoring in both 2010 and 2011…holds school record for most goals in a game (5) and most goals in a season (21), as well as most assists in a season…ODP Regional Pool…VA Legacy Club team…treasurer for National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society…grandfather was VMI Class of 1962, while two uncles were VMI Class of 1990...intends to major in Biology.

Coach’s Quote: “Meredith is an exciting attacking player, coming from Williamsburg Legacy and Bruton HS. She is a very strong midfield and attacking player that will contend for a starting position very early on this fall.”

Sydnie Bligh, Defender/Midfield, Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield

Helped Grassfield to its first regional title and state appearance in 2011…earned VHSL State Tournament recognition…former member of Far East All-Pacific All-Star team…All-Okinawa Soccer Tournament MVP…former captain of Western Branch Soccer Club and Okinawa Diplomats…played club soccer for Beach FC…earned VHSL’s over 3.5 GPA award…also a top-20 finalist in International Science Fair, and earned first place in a National History Day competition.

Coach’s Quote: “Sydnie Bligh had a tremendous spring for Grassfield HS, and comes from the Beach FC soccer program in Virginia Beach. She is a very strong defensive player, as well as an excellent player in the air with her head and overall aggressiveness.”

Erika Boggs, Midfield, Stafford, Va./Fredericksburg Academy

Four-year letterwinner at Fredericksburg Academy…also lettered in four other sports…two-time All-Conference…All-Conference Honorable Mention…All-Area athlete for 2011-12 season…ODP District and State teams…played for the Richmond Kickers…National Honor Society…intends to major in Biology.

Coach’s Quote: “Erika comes to us from Fredericksburg, where she played for FASA. She has proven to be a dominant midfield player with tremendous flexibility in the roles that she can take on. She played for the Super Y club this summer, so she comes with a great amount of experience into this season and I am pleased to have her joining us at VMI.”

Mackenzie Harrmann, Goalkeeper, Appleton, Wis./Appleton East

Two-year letterwinner at Appleton East…All-Conference Honorable Mention (2011)…played for ASC New United ’94 club team, the 2011 state champions…member of Wisconsin State Cup winners…Wisconsin State League participant…Midwest Regional League participant…Post-Crescent Academic All-Stars nominee…Rotary Club Academic Excellence nominee…Alliance for Young Artists and Writers regional honorable mention…plans to major in Physics.

Coach’s Quote: “Mackenzie comes to us from Appleton, Wisc. She had a tremendous year this year for her high school, Appleton East, helping her team deep into the state playoffs. She is an excellent goalkeeper, who I look to to strengthen and solidify our goalkeeping this fall. Mackenzie has the ability to challenge for a starting position right away.”

Rebecca Martz, Midfield/Defender, Berkley Springs, W. Va./Berkley Springs

Multiple seasons with the FC Frederick Premier club…ASL Champions and State Cup finalists…also played for an area Super Y program (USL League)…former WAGS Division 2 Alliance club member.

Coach’s quote: “Rebecca comes to us from FC Frederick club, where she has been a consistent player over the last several years. She is a tenacious outside midfield and defensive player. I look forward to her joining our team and helping our program move ahead in 2012.”

Courtney Mason, Midfield, Laytonsville, Md./Damascus HS

Three-year letterwinner at Damascus…two-year Team MVP…All-State, All-Met and All-County during her senior year…former team sportsmanship award winner…All-Country Senior Honors orchestra…Lions Quintet cellist…Merit of the Arts State Recipient award…class treasurer…also four-year letterwinner in track, competed in the Penn Relays and holds school record in 3,200-meter run.

Coach’s Quote: “Courtney Mason has been a perennial attacking and central midfield player in the Baltimore area over the last four years. She comes to us from the Damascus Dragons club, where she was a standout. She possesses great tactical ability as well as tremendous athleticism and endurance. I look forward to her having a tremendous impact with VMI women’s soccer this season.”

Sarah McGinnis, Goalkeeper, Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville HS

Four-year letterwinner at Kempsville HS in Virginia Beach…three-year starter…2010 All-Beach District First Team…2010 All-Region…2012 Team Captain…also received Coach’s Award for Leadership this past season…2011 Teammate of the Year…US Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete award, given to athlete who displayed poise, courage, leadership and self-confidence as a high school athlete…played club soccer with Beach FC…will attend VMI on Army ROTC scholarship.

Coach’s Quote: “Sarah comes to us from the Beach FC club programs, and has shown herself to be a leader, not only with her club team, but her high school team as well. I feel she will add to our goalkeeping contingent this fall, and I am looking forward to having her with us.”

Bridgette Pouliot, Defense, Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field

Focused her efforts on travel club soccer…lettered at Gar-Field HS as well and was named Honorable Mention All-District…played for Prince William Soccer ODP, including two years on the state squad in 2008 and 2009…intends to major in Biology at VMI.

Coach’s Quote: “Bridgette comes to us from Northern Virginia, where she played for PWSI soccer club and has been a dominant player over the past four years. Her success as a strong central defender, and occasionally as a striker, has made her invaluable to her club and high school. I look forward to her coming to us this fall as a potential true impact player, and helping to reenergize our back line and help get us back on track within the Big South.”
