VMI will open the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Basketball Championship serving as host of a first round match up with state rival Radford Monday night at Cameron Hall. Tipoff is 7 p.m., and fans can follow the game via live stats, an audio broadcast (VMIKeydets.com/WREL.com) or via the Big South Network video streaming package, with all links located above. The winner of Monday's game advances to Wednesday's noon quarterfinal round contest against No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina at Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C.
This will be the second time that VMI has faced Radford in a tournament setting. The Highlanders defeated the Keydets, 108-94, in the 2009 finals at the Dedmon Center on March 7, 2009, ending the Keydets’ 24-8 campaign that stands as the second-most season wins in school history.
VMI and Radford will meet for the 21st time in a series that began in 1976 before both schools joined the Big South Conference. Radford leads the rivalry, 19-17, but the Keydets have claimed the last four meetings, sweeping the regular season series both in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
Since joining the Big South Conference, VMI holds an 11-12 record in tournament games including a 5-5 mark under head coach Duggar Baucom. VMI reached the championship round game before falling in 2007 to Winthrop and 2009 to Radford. VMI is 2-0 in opening round games played at Cameron Hall. The Keydets knocked off Coastal Carolina, 96-76, in the quarterfinals in 2009, and topped Winthrop, 78-73, in the quarterfinals at Cameron Hall last year. The Keydets have reached the semifinals of the Big South Championship in three of the last five years.
