LEXINGTON, Va. – The Charleston Southern Buccaneers scored twice in the second inning and led wire to wire, en route to a 6-0 win over the VMI Keydets Sunday at Gray-Minor Stadium. The CSU (20-30, 11-10 Big South) win spoiled the VMI (15-34, 7-17) senior day festivities, as the eight Keydet seniors were honored prior to the contest.

After Keydet starter Andrew Deal (2-2) had pitched out of a first inning jam, CSU shortstop Alex Tomasovich led off the second by hitting the first pitch over the left field wall for a solo home run, his second of the year, to give his team a 1-0 advantage. Bobby Ison tacked on a RBI hit later in the inning, and the Bucs went on to score once in the third, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to account for the game’s six runs.

On the mound, Patrick Dolan (4-4) picked up the win for the visitors, allowing five hits and striking out eight over six innings. Deal took the loss by surrendering three runs over three innings, striking out four.

After Charleston Southern jumped ahead early, the Keydets threatened in the second innings. Cameron Walter and Nick Dwyer started the frame with back to back singles, but Matt Winn’s sacrifice bunt attempt bounced directly back to Dolan. The CSU pitcher threw to third base for the force play, retiring Walter, and Brandon Angus followed by bouncing into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

The Bucs then increased their lead in the third, as Chase Shelton had an infield hit lined off of Deal. Robbie Streett walked, and a Tomasovich single loaded the bases. One out later, Harrison Wilkins singled home a run to make it 3-0, CSU.

Jonathan Kelley relieved and kept CSU off the board in the fourth, but the visitors added on in the fifth. Two of the first three hitters singled, and Wilkins drew a walk to load the bases. John Garrett relieved and struck out Thomas Levander, but Blake Hunt singled to left to score two runs, increasing the CSU advantage to 5-0. The Bucs added a run in the sixth, doing so on a wild pitch.

VMI then mounted a rally in the sixth, when Rob Dickinson led off with a single. George Piccirilli then doubled, just over the head of Shelton in right field, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Dolan recovered, however, and struck out Jacob Morley, Walter and Dwyer consecutively to end the inning with no runs scoring.

The Keydets put together another push in the seventh, when Angus had a one-out single and Worthington reached on an error. One out later, Dickinson had an infield hit to load the bases, but Piccirilli flew out to right field to end the threat. Despite two eighth-inning hits, VMI would not get another runner into scoring position as CSU preserved the 6-0 margin.

Dickinson led the Keydet offense with a 3 for 4 day, while Dwyer notched two hits in four trips to the plate. Four different CSU players had a pair of hits on the afternoon.

VMI baseball will return to action Thursday, as the Keydets play host to the VCU Rams in VMI’s home finale for the 2012 season. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
