PRINCETON, N.J. – VMI’s Antonio Wood, on the strength of two top marks and a 400-meter personal best, ranks second in the decathlon after day one at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, which began Friday in Princeton, N.J.

Wood, the runner-up in the Big South decathlon last month, began his day by recording the second-best time (11.33) in the 100-meter dash. He then had the top mark in the long jump, a 6.94 meter (22’9 ¼”) effort, and recovered from a disappointing shot put to take top marks in the high jump at 1.98 meters (6’6”). He then capped his day with a 50.91 400-meter dash, a personal best effort that gave him a total of 3,662 points.

Wood trails leader Felix Siljeback-Larsen of Manhattan by 21 markers heading into day two, but those two have nearly a 100-point cushion over third place, Ben Waruch of Connecticut.

The decathletes, as well as the rest of the IC4A/ECAC competitors, will return to action Saturday at 9 a.m.
