Ashley Miller, who was the 2012 Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year, led the way for the Huskers and was joined by fellow seniors Breanna Bussel, Blaire Dinsdale, Erica Hamik, Cami Jiskra, Jade Siegel and Victoria Zimmerman. BYU matched Nebraska with 15 selections, while Oregon and Minnesota followed with 14. Florida State and Arkansas rounded out the top-five teams with 11. The Big Ten managed a national-best 81 selections, while the Big 12 had 76 and the Pac-12 followed with 66.
The men were led by 2012 Nebraska Male Student-Athlete of the Year Tyler Hitchler. A CoSIDA Academic All-American, Hitchler was joined on the USTFCCCA list by fellow academic All-Americans Bjorn Barrefors and Nate Polacek. BYU led the country with 16 named to the All-Academic Team, followed by Minnesota (11), Stanford (10) and Duke (9). The Big Ten Conference was the leading league with 47 named to the list. The Big 12 (45) and the ACC (42) were next in the tally.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
In addition, both the men's and women's squads were named All-Academic scholar teams. The women's team was one of 171 teams, while the men were one of 85 earning the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.
