SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --- The first day is in the books at the Volleyball Hall of Fame/Morgan Classic Friday night, as California Baptist University fell to Lees-McRae in four sets.
CBU lost (25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 26-24), this was the Lancers fourth straight loss in a very long East Coast road trip.
The Lancers in the opening set hit .120 with five kills on 25 attempts, while the Bobcats hit .219 with 15 kills on 32 attempts. The Lancers grabbed an early lead at 10-6, but would force to many errors towards the end of the set to hold on. The Bobcats would end the set with a 16-9 run.
The lead changed hands four times and was tied a total of 11 times throughout the first game.
The second set would be all Lancers, as they mounted a 16-11 advantage mid-way through the set. The Bobcats would make a run for the lead, but the Lancers would hold on at 17-16 and finish the set with an 8-2 run to tie the match at 1-1. In the second set, the Lancers hit .172 with 12 kills on 29 attempts. The Bobcats hit -.069 with six kills on 29 attempts.
Lees-McRae would gain control in the third with a 17-13 lead, but the Lancers weren't done just yet. Lancers Connor Metcalfe, Daniel Freitas, and Garrett Kreutziger would make a huge block that would cut the lead to 24-21, but would follow it with a Lancer service ace to give the Bobcats the third set.
It looked like the Lancers would push the match to five, as they came out strong in the fourth set leading 13-6. The Bobcats would respond with a 9-2 run that would tie the match up at 15-15. Both teams from then on out would lead by no more then two points for the remainder of the match. A huge smash by Corey Bates would tie the match up at 24-24, but the Bobcats would tally to big blocks to end the set and win the match.
Lancers Freitas and Bates would both hit .333 to finish the match with 21 kills between both of them. Metcalfe finished the match with 32 assists, seven digs, and three blocks.
The Lancers would out-hit the Bobcats .172-.152 and out-dig 39-37 on the match.
CBU will face UC Santa Cruz Saturday night at 6 pm.
