Bulls in the Mix After Day 1 of Central Regional

By TOM ZEBOLD

USF Senior Writer

No matter if it's No. 1 or No. 5, members of the Bulls' lineup have the ability to step up in any given round and it showed Thursday during opening action of the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio.

Anna Hancock, playing in the five spot, shot 3 over to get into a tie for 19th with teammate Shena Yang that helped the Big East champion USF women's golf team start off in a tie for 11th place on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State. The top eight teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championship that takes place May 22-25 at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

No. 16 seed USF is at 21 over and just one shot out of eighth place. The No. 46 Bulls are ahead of six teams ranked in the top 45 including No. 16 Ohio State, which is tied for 12th with No. 34 Arkansas at 22 over.

"I think we're in an incredible position going into the second day," USF head coach Marci Kornegay said. "We're not out of it and we have a little work to do to stay in it. That's what we do best is finish up strong."

Hancock posted two birdies, nine pars and had an eagle on the par-5 14th hole. The defining moment of the sophomore's round was after she started the front nine off with three straight bogeys. The Lakeland native responded with three straight pars and finished the day with a birdie on No. 9.

"Starting on the fifth hole I just had a change of attitude and golf seemed easy, which was surprising on this course because it's very challenging," Hancock said.

Yang, playing in the three spot, started her day with five bogeys on the back nine and bounced back with four birdies in the final nine holes after changing her own frame of mind.

"After my front nine I told myself, 'Alright, well that kind of sucked. Let's get out there and do what I have to do to help this team climb up that leader board,'" Yang said. "At that point I just tried to keep things together and make pars because I figured that would be the birdies of the day. I just started a new round and went and played out there."

Yang's round definitely had the birdie theme in more ways than one because her second shot on the second hole actually hit a bird.

"The bird was on the ground, which is never good. The bird got back up and flew away," Kornegay said with a laugh.

Yang composed herself and made a par on the hole.

Big East Player of the Year Christina Miller, the team's top-seeded player, is at 7 over and All-Big East selection Kelli Pry is a shot behind from the two spot. Performances from Hancock and Yang showed once again that if a couple players are just a bit off their game USF can still hang with some of the best in the country.

"Anybody can step up at any given time," Kornegay said. "For us to be this close, within reaching distance of the top eight, we just need a couple more girls step up and I think we'll be OK."
