Release: 05/06/2012
MONROE, La. - ULM's Caleb Wine limited the Trojans to six hits and three runs with a career-high six strikeouts over 8.0 innings to lead the Warhawks (24-24, 11-13) to a 7-4 victory over UALR (23-24, 10-14) in the rubber match of a three-game Sun Belt series on Sunday. Wine threw seven scoreless innings after allowing a run in the top of the first, and retired 11-consecutive batters during one stretch to improve to 6-4 on the year.

Jeremy Sy and Joey Rapp combined for six hits, three runs and four RBI to lead the way for the Warhawks. ULM scored five of its seven runs in the bottom of the third, with Rapp delivering a two-run double to right center.

UALR starter Cameron Allen (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing five hits, five runs and two walks over 2.0 innings. Four players accounted for all eight of UALR's hits, with senior Nick Rountree pacing the offense with a 2-for-4, two-RBI performance.

UALR returns to action Tuesday night when it heads to Dickey-Stephens Park to take part in the State Farm Arkansas Classic. Arkansas State and UAPB will play at 3:30 p.m. in the first game of the doubleheader, followed by UALR and Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Rountree plated sophomore Ben Crumpton with a two-out, RBI single to left. Crumpton reached base with a single through the right side and moved into scoring position by stealing second - his team-leading 20th stolen base of the year. ULM answered in the bottom half as back-to-back doubles by Caleb Clowers and Sy tied things up at 1-all. Allen walked Corben Green to put two runners on base with two outs, but prevented ULM from taking the lead by getting an inning-ending 6-4 fielder's choice from Judd Edwards.

Tied at 1-all, ULM manufactured three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead after Les Aulds drew a leadoff walk from Allen to start the rally. Aulds moved over to third on a single by Clowers, and scored on the next at-bat as Sy singled to left center. Rapp followed with a two-run double to right center to plate both runners and give the Warhawks a 4-1 advantage.

Junior Marshal Hamrick took the mound for Allen after Rapp's double, but ULM quickly loaded the bases with no outs on the board off back-to-back bunt singles. Justin Stawychny made it a 5-1 ballgame with a sacrifice fly to center, and Logan Fiasco extended the lead to five runs with a two-out, RBI double just inside the left field foul line. Hamrick got UALR out of the inning in the next at-bat as Aulds grounded out to first - ending a frame in which ULM sent 10 batters to the plate and totaled six hits.

Hamrick worked scoreless frames in the fourth, fifth and sixth (retiring seven in-a-row over one stretch), before turning things over to sophomore Austin Pfeiffer in the bottom of the seventh. ULM quickly chased Pfeiffer from the game, however, as Sy and Rapp greeted him with consecutive singles, forcing the Trojans to call on Andrew Hohn. The sophomore left hander took the mound with runners on the corners and no outs, but managed to hold ULM to just one run off a sacrifice fly by Edwards.

Wine prevented UALR from getting a rally going by facing the minimum number of batters in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth; retiring 11-straight Trojans after allowing a leadoff single to junior Chris Burk in the top of the fifth. UALR's bats came back to life in the top of the ninth as Wine looked to wrap up the complete game, as senior Cameron Bentley and Crumpton opened the inning with back-to-back doubles.

The Warhawks brought on Wil Browning to close out the win with runners on second and third and no outs, but the Trojans scored on each of the next two at-bats off a ground ball to short by senior Sean Bignall and a run-scoring base knock to right by Rountree. Browning got outs from the next two Trojans, before Burk delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to left. Trailing 7-4 with runners on first and second, Browning got a game-ending grounder from the next batter to seal the win.
